Technology

Some of the information available in this section of the website, as of September 2025 is out of date. This should not be critical unless some dedicated soul is trying to reconstruct the installation from scratch, in which case there are much better ways of going about this project than those I stumbled upon – I suggest you do it your way.

The project was built using trial and error there was no master plan. Hardware and software solutions were developed on the fly. The end result is very complicated (much more than it needed to be). As I had no great mastery of any of the programming languages or the Linux platform it is likely that the asterisks, python, pure data, midi and shell scripts are very poorly conceived and written.

Some of the interactive elements using sensors have not been successfully implemented. For example presence detection relies on pressure pads connected to an arduino under the floor of the telephone box. There are much more reliable human presence detectors available for the arduino that would not fail when the weather changes and the wooden floor warps. The installation copes very badly with the unexpected. It assumes one lone individual in the box at a time. Multiple individuals waiting for a turn trigger external sensors to trigger various enticements to enter, sometimes including ringing the telephone. This confuses both user and system and it will likely crash.
